description
during the development of the new 3er cabrio, bmw's executives have been hesitating between two options : stick to tradition and design a soft-top convertible, or follow the trend and design a coupé/convertible / in the end the second option has prevailed, maybe under the influence of the numerous coupé/convertible projects developed on the basis of the former 3-series by edscha, heuliez et open air systems / however, it was out of the question to jeopardize the usually praised elegance of the 3-series convertibles, even though lots of hardtop convertibles suffer from ungraceful silhouettes

bmw's engineers reached their goal by designing a 3-part retractable roof which front part slides between the backlight and the center part / the whole set retracts in 22 seconds into an unusually slender trunk / it is even possible to operate the roof at a short distance thanks to a remote control in the key / the back of the rear seat can be folded in order to accomodate additional luggage, which is not superfluous considering the lack of space in the trunk when the roof is down

based on the 3er coupé, the convertible has of course the same basic technical data and inherits from most of its engines / in 2008 a 400 hp v8 m3 version will be offered
